Samburu lies northwest of Mount Kenya, the sacred mountain of the Kikuyus, 2nd in altitude of all Africa. You are north of the equator, the landscape is semi desert savannah, the beautiful hills are arid and dry, but fortunately the Ewaso River brings refreshing waters, and some surprises : elephants bathing and drinking, huge crocodiles silently sliding towards their prey, often unaware of the danger, lions gone to the water to drink or hunt. Samburu is the place for some uncommon animals : reticulated giraffes, with their geometric patches, Grevy zebras with large fur ears, Somalian ostriches with blue legs, Beisa oryxes… And some other acquaintances : lions, cheetahs, elephants, buffalos, and so many birds, if you can appreciate them, and take the time to listen. Here, like in Meru, the doum palm tree is the king, along the River. Oh, one memory to share : we were coming back to our lodge, it was sunset, and while driving along the river we witnessed this special scene : one lioness defending her kill, a greater male kudu, against a crocodile jumping out of the water, with a big slam on his face.
